About

My name is Linda Conn.  I am running to represent the families and community members of Prescott.  I believe our education system in Arizona, including Prescott, has gone sideways.  We have gone from a sound educational/academic curriculum through Common Core, CRT (which has morphed into SEL--Social-Emotional Learning), Gender fluidity/dysphoria, and other issues.  It is time we returned to education rather than propaganda and lay the groundwork for our children to be successful adults.  We are not getting what we expect and demand for our children from the district.  It is time for a change, and I believe I am a person who can help bring about this change.

 

I am a retired elementary school teacher.  I taught for 25 years, teaching mostly elementary grades from K-6, Spending the majority of time in 3rd-5th grades. I have seen and practiced what is successful and am distressed by our current path. After the Columbine School Shootings and the Sandy Hook massacre I returned to school and received my Master’s Degree in School Counseling to work more with troubled youth.

 

Prior to my teaching career, I was a police 911 dispatcher for 18 years and have seen the results of good and bad education in the real world.  I want our children to be on the successful side of this equation.

 

There is another side to my life.  I am a successful artist, recognized throughout Arizona for my woodcarvings of Western culture.  I love to escape the real world to my carving hobby. I also carve hard-shell gourds.  My carvings require a vision and the discipline to bring that art to life.  These are things our children should have, and they depend on us to provide the quality education to make them successful at whatever they deem to be their own success.

& Transparency

  • Course content shall be made available to parents and taxpayers.

  • Abandon Common Core Standards and adopt B.E.S.T (Benchmarks for Excellent Student Thinking). Add a Civics element and Humanities for well-rounded success.

  • Make the budget readable and understandable to everyone- follow the money.

​​

  • Review all current contracts for compliance to the AZ Parent's Bill of Rights.

Mental Health of Students 

  • Advocates for a school-based mental health professional such as a therapist or psychologist to provide students with the support they need--teachers are NOT psychologists. They should make referrals, not act like a "Social Health Doctors".

  • Social-Emotional Learning and SEL Counselors do not belong in the schools and should be weeded out of the great curriculum that was in place and was embedded through Common Core Standards.

Fiscal Responsibility

  • Budget so more dollars are used for direct instruction in the classroom.

  • Require an Executive Audit and report of the budget written in lay terms and understandable to all. 

Real World Skills

  • Empower students with skills and competencies to adapt to a constantly changing world. A missing element is that educators and students have not been taught the true basics of how to study and learn. Thus students are never really taught to become self-learners.

Parent-Teacher Collaboration

  • Collaboration between parents, teachers, and students is key to creating a successful classroom.

  • Require that classrooms are set-up to allow parents to monitor what is being taught during the day. Through the school district private server creates something similar to Zoom meetings every day.
